Because God is ever lasting and Jacob is not.
Jacob seems to be one of the higher authorities above Ben. He was mentioned in Episode 6 when Pickett said, "Shephard wasn't even on Jacob's List." The screen shot in the brainwashing video is mentioning Jacob in the past tense because, like in all cults, the leader is always being compared to a God like person. That is how the leader of a cult stays in charge. The followers are supposed to beleive he is the closest thing to god they will find. And if God loves Jacob, their leader, then God must love the followers.
David Koresh, from the Waco cult, probably used similar videos and ideas. That is how they get followers, they make it look like they have a direct line to God.
I was slightly disappointed to see the show going in the direction of a cult atmosphere. But as we already know, there are other people involved with the Others who are in charge besides Ben. Ben can't possibly be the highest authority we will ever see. Jacob must be one of them. Or Jacob is used as a Jesus type figure, he is dead, but still used as an icon. Or Jacob is fictional and his idea is used to keep people under control.
I am going to assume though that Jacob's List is the list of the "good ones." When Pickett made the comment about the list, he was referring to the fact that Ben was letting one of them (survivors) do surgery on him and "Shephard wasn't even on Jacob's list."
Could it be that Jacob is referred to in the past tense because he is dead. If Jacob is coming back that can only mean that he is going to return from the dead. What better way to solidify the cult. I suspect some sort of cult trickery. Unless the others really are the good guys!
Past tense as in biblical reference.
I think jacob was the first of the Dharma experimet.
Like Adam for God
I believe that in the Bible, Jacob (as in Jacob's ladder) was the only one in the old testament whom God said that he loved. Jacob was brothers with Esau and even within the womb the two brothers fought one another. Jacob had two wives and 12 sons. The name Jacob is supposed to mean "One who wrestles with God..." - Snowflake
I think they are referring to Jacob from the Bible. The background of this screenshot is stairs...Jacob's Ladder?

B&ws Dog@#
jacob could be dead and not "him"
I just realized that in the bible Rachel is married to Jacob and she can't get pregant and then by a miracle she does. This is because like someone said earlier Jacob was the first person God loved. Then in last nights episode someone named Rachel miraculously gets pregnant and the film says how God loved Jacob.
Cool, well at lest we have proof that g*d is a man. Take that Femonites.
Im not really sure about this whole cult thing though because of juliet. She has been there for 3 years, or something to that effect, and she is jumping at the chance to leave the place (or so it seems), im thinking if it was a cult she would never want to leave-or never get to leave.
Maybe they're saying that God doesn't love Jacob anymore for what he's done... perhaps he's an evil man and he's doing evil things. God doesn't love people like that, and the Others know it.
Just a guess.
I think they are saying Gd loves you, as he loved Jacob.
^^you don't say^^
"Why does the video refer to Jacob in the past tense?" <-- very simply, because either 1) God no longer loves Jacob or 2) Jacob no longer exists
because..god is dead.. and jacob is dead. not that they ever even existed
haha
this is for haha annon - leave your personal religious lack of belief out of this.
Erm I was never good with grammer, but I know names etc start with capital letters and such.
So -
"God loved you as He loved Jacob"
My crappy grammer says there's three people in this statement, God, He, and Jacob. Basically, 'God loves you' as 'He loved Jacob'. Comparing the two. This either stems that Jacob is dead, (but how is that possible if Jack wasn't on his list) or He doesn't love Jacob anymore.
Maybe I'm nittpicking.
Thoughts?
Many Christians and Jews, when using a pronoun to refer to God will capitalize it. So He probably refers to God. And yes, the names are ALWAYS significant on Lost.
maybe if it is a cult situation and Jacob is in fact dead, his list refers to a prophecy. Maybe the "leader" (perhaps Ben) was able to take what jacob said and make the list. IE. as often happens in the bible, God speak directly to an indevidual and they follow His orders or translate his orders to give to a group or following. Such as the Moses thing.
Sorry if this doesn't make much sense, i'm not sure if i believe it. But it might be an idea.
um, it is past tense in the Bible.
"As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated."
~Romans 9:13
it could be a specific reference to that.
Right, all the above seem to tie-together for us.
Ethan Rom- aka THE ROMAN. Apologises to UK viewers (as I am one too) but I believe on a future episode Ethan is seen by juliet leaving/near her sister Rachel's place? Something like that, anyway, we think that somehow, Ethan had something to do with Rachel finally getting pregnant. This links to the above bible reference from 'Romans'
In the bible, as said above, Jacob is married to Rachel. Jacob is the God-like character in Lost (seen as God for the Others or God's disciple type thing)
We just think the whole Jacob, Rachel and Romans bible thing has something to do with Lost, as always
Am loving the religious undertones tho, keep it up!

i really like the rachel and jacob idea...
the thing about jacob and rachel in the bible is that rachel's father, laban, was a jerk. jacob made a deal with him that he would work for 7 years for laban and then get to marry rachel as the reward. so when the 7 years were up, laban pulled a switcheroo and had jacob marry leah, rachel's older sister. so jacob had to work another 7 years to be able to marry rachel, who he really loved, because men could marry tons of women in those days. and the other thing is that leah popped out babies like crazy, but rachel, as someone pointed out, couldn't get preggie. not sure how this all fits, but i think there's a link between in there somewhere...
I think we can just look at this in the reliious context. Jacob tricked his father into the birthright but was still loved by God. In this measure, the others are decieving the losties or those that work with them. But they are still loved by God. They must not fear judgement for their actions.
The name "Jacob" means supplanter, or one who supercedes another often through force or cunning.
Jacob in the Bible had his named changed to Israel which means "God contended."
I too think its a biblical referance. However, i'm sure there is a pun in there as well. Since we know their leader is also Jacob.
Because Jacobs name was later changed to Isreal
jack is jacob...
Rachel died giving birth to "Benjamin" o_O
i was just re-watching season 1 last night, the episode when kate goes to see her mom in the hospital and accidentally gets tom killed. anyways, tom's wife's name is rachel. it may be nothing, or it could be juliet's sister.
Ok,ok. Lets thing this through in a way that makes sense for the writers. This show has to make sense in a sensible way. If it gets too sci-fi-ish, they will lose a lot of their ratings.
The only people able to make lists were who? Ethan and Goodwin, right? Goodwin could have easily been the guy's last name. What if Ethan was a last name. I believe Jacob Ethan is perfectly reasonable.
Have we looked at the fact that this could just be a person trying to create the perfect society. Jacob has been refered to as day one on lost....the book, the bad twin...Jacob was a twin. I agree that perhaps "Adam and Eve" the bodies they found on the island is this Jacob idol they believe in. He was chosen now they are using his name as a way to complete their tests and create this society they use the name Jacob to keep people believing what they are doing is in God's plan. They are only after the good ones, people who socially can be forced to fit into the society as a whole. Brain washing is obviously involved. We already know of money backers for the project: Hanso, Oceanic, Mettilos, the famous Alpert, and Widmore labs!!! They all back this island as a way to test their own personal interest... Fertility... Religion (Locke), Mittelos... TIme.... It all seems to add to soemthing
Jacob and Joseph
The Bible relates the story of Joseph, who was separated from his father Jacob at the age of 17 and sent down to Egypt as a slave by his brothers, who were jealous of his dreams of kingship over them. Jacob was deeply grieved by the loss of his favorite son, and refused to be comforted. Christian commentators have speculated that this was a punishment from God due to Jacob's earlier sins, which included impersonation of Esau (a form of lying or deception).
Has no-one notice that "He" is capitalised. Could this be a chemical symbol for helium ??? Dont ask me what it means, its just an idea....
mmackay
i believe that jacob is the guy in the Dharma video that the losties found in the hatch
probably wrong though lol
God loves you as Helium loved Jacob? Really?!?!? In Christianity, all pronouns referencing God are capitalized to show respect and that, you know, you're talking about God and not the periodic table of elements.
It ses god loves you as he loves jacobs! Then b4 Juliet shot that danny or denny he said why did ben bring Jack he wasnt on jacobs list! and in ep 1 or 2 they said on jacobs list. You think jacobs the big leader? becsue when jack and that caught ben they asked about there leader and he said im not the leader the leader is a great man or sumit lol x
"Jacob" leads one to believe, at first, that the "others" are using a biblical figure to convey an idea or ideology to promote thier purpose. But another statement saying that Jack is "not on Jacob's list" says to me that "Jacob" is a real person, the leader (or one of the leaders) within the Others' cult. "Jacob" is probably not his real name, as many cult leaders portray themselves as the likeness of a biblical personage to their followers. I suspect "Jacob" is a man living not on the island, but in the real world-- on the outside with LOTS of money. I might guess that Penny's father knows who he is.
Well, my guess is it's talking about the bible's Jacob. Since he's dead, and catholic church doesn't believes in reincarnation... He loved Jacod.
